New £95,000 play area opens on Whitehaven estate

A revitalised West Cumbrian play area has been officially opened.

The Newlands Play Area in Mirehouse was opened by representatives of Cumberland Council and pupils from Valley Primary School.

The Mirehouse community voted for the play area as a priority for the community.

Pupils from the primary school helped choose the equipment that was bought by a £95,000 contribution from Well Whitehaven – a project aimed at improving the lives of those living in the Mirehouse and Corkickle communities.

Michael Barry, Cumberland Council’s assistant director of neighbourhoods, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to officially open the Newlands Play Area.

“The pupils chose the equipment very wisely and I’m sure this area will be well used and much loved by the whole community.

“My gratitude also goes to our fantastic parks and open spaces team who have worked incredibly hard to get the play area ready for today’s event.”

Luke Richardson, chair of Well Whitehaven, said: “Play parks are a space for kids to have fun, laugh, and exercise.

“Whether it’s improving physical health, imagination, or social connection – these spaces are important.

“It’s equally important that this was something the local community wanted and challenged Well Whitehaven to get behind.

“Children at Valley Primary School supported the idea and designed the play park. While it was funded by Well Whitehaven and created by Cumberland Council, it was asked for and inspired by the people of Mirehouse.”
