Wins for Cockermouth and Carlisle in T20 competition

Carlisle and Cockermouth picked up wins last night from the first round of matches in the North Group of the Cumbria League’s T20 competition.

While Carlisle were beating Wigton by six wickets at Edenside, Cockermouth were winning by eight wickets at home to Keswick.

Wigton were invited to bat first after losing the toss against Carlisle and quickly lost both openers before the innings was rescued by professional Chris Hodgson (62 from 49) and Lewis Little (21).

They eventually reached 130-9 in their 20 overs with Nico Watt (3-13) the most successful Carlisle bowler.

Although losing three early wickets Carlisle were virtually carried to victory by pro Michael Slack (56) and Ben Davidson (42no), eventually reaching 132-4 in the 17th over. Hodgson took 2-15 in his four overs.

At Sandair Keswick won the toss and chose to bat but could only manage 89-7 in their 20 overs.

Pro Risith Upamal was their top scorer with 24 while skipper Matt Sempill took 3-10 from his four overs.

Gareth White, with a run a ball 49no and Alex Grainger (25) saw Cockermouth well on their way with an opening stand of 56 and they eventually reached 90-2 from 16 overs.

In the West section Workington made it two wins from two games when they beat Egremont by 30 runs at Gillfoot.

Overseas amateur Davis Mills followed up his century in the opening game with 55 not out and a good knock from opener Tom Fox (25) carried them to 155, all out off the penultimate ball. Coady Scott took 3-23 for Egremont.

Matt Hunter (30) and Vathsal Govind (30) led the Egremont response but when the pro was caught on the boundary by Mills and Ben Scott ended his four over spell with 5-11 the home innings fell away to 125 all out.

Whitehaven won at Cleator by seven wickets, getting to their target with four balls to spare.

Professional Terance Warde was the match-winner with 73 not out off 45 deliveries, during which he hit ten fours and a six. He was helped in the end by Josh Foster (26no off 22 balls).

Earlier Darren Clark had starred for Cleator with 49 from 24 deliveries as the home side posted 131-6 from their 20 overs.

In the South group Furness lead the way, winning their second game when they beat Dalton by eight wickets.

Dalton, the only First Division side taking part in the competition, chose to bat first and were bowled out in 18.2 overs for 98 with Callum Leach top-scoring on 18.

Ryan Griffiths took 3-6 from three over for Furness while Josh Shaw had 3-29 from four.

Furness didn’t hang about in reaching their target with Garry Thompson leading the way, He was 40 not out from 17 balls and hit seven fours and a six.

Griffiths (29) and Subhan Shirzad (22 no off nine) saw that Furness reached their target in only 8.1 overs for the loss of two wickets.

In the other game Millom got back to winning ways when they beat Lindal Moor by 27 runs.

They chose to bat after winning the toss and in their 20 overs made 153-3 after openers Robert Thompson (54) and Graham Dawson (37) put on 73 for the first wicket. Then Luke Ivison smashed his way to 46no off 29 balls.

In reply Lindal could only manage 126-8 with Ryan Gilmour (24) and Brad Stephens (21) their main contributors. Dawson had 3-12 and Dec Tyson took 3-20.
