Budget chain Wilko has collapsed into administration, putting thousands of jobs at risk.
The firm, which has stores in Carlisle, Barrow, Cockermouth, Whitehaven and Workington, is expected to close dozens of outlets across the country – although it is not clear which will be affected.
The retailer has been in talks with potential buyers but none have been able to put a deal together in time.
It filed a notice of intent that it was heading towards administration on August 3.
Administrators from PricewaterhouseCoopers are set to be appointed this afternoon.
It is understood that managers were told the news at 9am and went on to brief staff in stores.
