Holders Workington Reds have landed a home draw in the first round of the Fred Conway County Cup,

They will host Gosforth as they start the defence of the trophy they won last season with a record-breaking 9-1 win over Penrith.

The first round draw has thrown up some cracking ties, with two in particular catching the eye.

West Cumbrian rivals Whitehaven and Cleator Moor Celtic, who meet tomorrow night at the County Ground in the West Lancashire League, have been drawn against each other – also at Whitehaven – in the County Cup.

There’s anticipation, too, in Carlisle at an inter-city clash which should be a mouth-watering confrontation – Carlisle City v Carlisle Utd.

Wigton Harriers, who won the County League Premier Division last season, have been drawn at home to Keswick, who have joined this season from the Westmorland League.

The full draw is: Workington v Gosforth; Whitehaven v Cleator Moor Celtic; Silloth v Whitehaven Miners Social; Wigton Harriers v Keswick; Wetheriggs Utd v Kirkoswald, Windscale v Braithwaite; Carlisle City v Carlisle United; Cockermouth v Maryport Athletic; Penrith v Bransty Rangers.

Seven clubs have received first round byes – Eden Valley, Dearham Utd, Unisun Athletic, Alston Moor, Aspatria, Mirehouse, Greystoke.

The Sunday County Cup has also been drawn, with clubs in East and West kept separate until the quarter final stafe.

The east draw:

Denton Holme v Lloys No 1 Reunited; Crusaders v Newlaithes; Unison Athletic Social v Museum Inn; The Gosling Bridge v Border Towns Utd; Scotby v Currock; St. Nicholas Arms v Gillford Park; Dalston JBR v Re-United FC; Border Towns Athletic v Longtown; Northbank 1970 v Jovial Sailor.

Byes to: QZone, Harraby Catholic, Wheatsheaf, Dalston, Dalston JBR 2000, Inter Pirelli, GFC Houghton.

In the west there are only three first round ties, with the other 13 clubs receiving byes.

Ties are: Northside v Salterbeck; Flimby Social v Dearham; Moresby v Thornhill.
