An inquest has been opened into the death of a 34-year-old man involved in a collision in north Cumbria.
Rory Amos, of Brampton, died at the scene of a collision involving a silver Volkswagen Golf on Thursday, July 27 on the town’s Capon Tree Road.
In a tribute released by police, Rory’s family said he was a passionate supporter of Scottish football club Hibernian, often following his team home and away.
“Rory was part of a close family. A loving son, brother, uncle and grandson taken tragically too soon,” their statement read. “He was a friend to many and the life and soul of any occasion with a witty sense of humour and always had a story to tell. He will be sadly missed by us all.”
Police had been called at 5.36pm to reports of a collision. The road was closed for a number of hours as a forensic collision investigation took place. A public appeal for witnesses was also launched in the aftermath.
This morning at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court, an inquest into Rory’s death was formally opened.
This was carried out by Robert Cohen, an assistant coroner for Cumbria, who confirmed the date and location of the driver’s death during a brief hearing.
“The circumstances reported to the court in respect of the death of Mr Amos are that he was the driver of a vehicle involved in an unwitnessed single vehicle road traffic collision,” said Mr Cohen. “In the circumstances it is plainly apropriate that I should open an inquest into the death of Mr Amos, and I do so.”
Formal identity of Mr Amos had been carried out by his mother, Diana, the hearing was told.
This was then adjourned by Mr Cohen to the preliminary date of January 25 2024, for a full hearing to take place.
A Cumbria police spokesman said this morning said there was not currently any requirement for further witness appeals in relation to the incident.
