Former Barrow star John Rooney has signed for Macclesfield who have started slowly in the NPL Premier Division.

The Silkmen have agreed terms with National League Oldham Athletic to return to his old club.

Rooney joined the club’s Academy back in 2002 and made his professional debut against Barnet in 2008.

Like brother Wayne, 32-year-old John started in the youth section at Everton before joining Macclesfield.

Short spells at Bury and Barnsley before a good stint at Chester where he scored 26 goals in 112 appearances.

He then spent time with Wrexham and Guiseley before linking up with Barrow in 2018 where he scored 27 goals in 83 games.

After two years he moved to Stockport (20 goals in 55 games) before a brief return to Holker Street where he scored five goals in 27 games.

Oldham Athletic was the next port of call and the attacking midfielder made 32 appearances for The Latics last season scoring twice for David Unsworth’s side.

He will come into contention for Saturday’s FA Cup-tie when they visit Northern League side Whickham.

The Silkmen won the NPL West Division last season when Workington finished third and were promoted with them via the play-offs.

Macclesfield are only eighth in NPL Premier after six games in which they have been beaten twice and drawn once. They are due at Workington on Saturday, November 18.
