Darlington, who knocked out Workington in Friday’s FA Cup-tie have appointed a new manager.
The Quakers beat Reds 3-1 under the caretaker management of three senior players but have now named Josh Gowling as their new boss.
Gowling had a brief career with Carlisle United although he only played four League games for the club in an 18-year-long career which saw him clock up 398 appearances around the country.
He signed for Carlisle on a free transfer on 19 June 2008 when his contract with Bournemouth had run out.
He agreed a two-year contract with the club, who had lost in the League One play-offs the previous season, but spent most of that season on loan at Hereford, against whom he had made his league debut for Carlisle.
A centre-half he had played 83 games for Bournemouth and he went on to play most of his football for Kidderminster (106), Grimsby Town (58) and Gillingham (53).
Gowling, 39, is a UEFA ualified coach, and had joined Hereford for the second time as a player in December 2018, and in January 2020 was appointed their player-manager following the departure of Russell Slade.
In 2021, he guided them to the FA Trophy final at Wembley only to lose to Hornchurch, and he also led the Bulls to the first round of the FA Cup last season against Portsmouth in a televised game. He also took them to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup in season 2021-22.
Former Darlington midfielder Danny Rose has been appointed as his assistant.
Also a UEFA A coach, he is well known to Darlington fans as he joined the club on loan from Grimsby Town in October 2021, and then signed a permanent deal as a player-coach in the summer of 2022.
He started his playing career at Manchester United, and went on to play for Oxford United, Newport County, Fleetwood, Aldershot, Oxford, Northampton, Portsmouth, Swindon, Grimsby and Darlington.
He won five promotions with Newport County, Fleetwood, Northampton, Portsmouth and Swindon and made over 500 appearances in his career.
