Carlisle City made progress in the FA Vase with a fine 1-0 win at Newcastle Benfield.
A strong contender for goal of the season from Sam Atkinson just before half-time was the decider.
Manager Jim Nichols said: “Sam is one of the best strikers of a ball in the League and this one was exceptional. It’s alright spotting a goalkeeper off his line and having a go to chip him but it’s another matter being able to execute that.
“Sam was about two yards inside our half when he saw their keeper off his line and he scored with a superb strike.
“I think it’s blown goal of the season competition out of the water.”
That was the only goal of the game and City were generally comfortable apart from the closing stages of the game.
“They had a very good shout for a penalty and then missed a great chance but apart from that I thought we didn’t have a lot to trouble us.
“It was pleasing to come back from last week’s 6-0 home defeat by Shildon. That was a case of us being very poor and them being very good.
“But we got back to basics and although they changed from two weeks ago when we beat them in the League, a more physical approach didn’t trouble us.
“We are now looking forward to a game in mid-week when we play Carlisle United in the County Cup. I am sure that’s going to be a very good test for us as I know Paul (Simpson) will send a strong side.”
