
Travis Fyfe was the hat-trick hero for Whitehaven as they beat local rivals Cleator Moor Celtic 3-2 in the first round of the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup.
The teams had agreed before the game that in the event of a draw after 90 minutes they would go to extra time.
Carlisle City and Carlisle United agreed to settle their tie on penalties when they also finished all square.
The decision was taken to play the game at Whitehaven on the Astro turf because of the impending weather and already softened pitch.
It is always a hotly contested, proper derby and for the first 20 minutes both teams hardly took a breath.
Celtic got the only goal through Adam Smith in a frantic first half which was end-to-end and saw both teams creating chances.
The second half started in similar fashion although Whitehaven started to keep possession better asnd moved the ball quicker into the wide areas.
On the hour mark Whitehaven manager Jon Karl Benson introduced Fyfe – with almost instant success. Fyfe sent a curling effort beyond Celtic keeper Scott Paden-Gale into the top corner.
There were no further goals and extra-time saw Whitehaven start to dictate the game.
It was Fyfe who put Whitehaven ahead with his second, cleverly beating his man and firing into the bottom corner.
His hat-trick came from a good finish after Whitehaven had broken quickly out of defence.
Celtic pulled one back late on through Darren Little but couldn’t take it to penalties.
