A walker who was ‘looking for a challenge’ and decided to camp overnight on Skiddaw during Storm Agnes had to be rescued by volunteers.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said the man had reached the exposed summit ridge and experienced the full force of the storm.
He slipped and cut his face, but his calls for help were not helped by the wind noise.
A team spokesman said: “Due to time it would take for the team to get to the summit the man was encouraged to self rescue by descending the hill and out of the worst of the wind.
“His movement was monitored by Phonefind but he was making very slow progress. A small team was therefore deployed and found the man on the path below the summit.
“He was walked off with the support of team members down to the team vehicle.”
The team was out for around three-and-a-half hours.
