Barrow’s defeat by Grimsby Town

The match stats heavily favoured Barrow – apart from the one that mattered – a 2-1 scoreline to Grimsby Town.

The Bluebirds had 57-43 per cent possession; got off 24 shots to Grimsby’s nine of which seven were on target opposed to six and they won seven corners to four.

But the home side took the points to end a three match losing run and which pulled them to within two points of 10th-placed Barrow.

In a lively first-half Danny Rose headed narrowly wide for Grimsby while Dean Campbell shot over from a good position for Barrow.

After 16 minutes Grimsby had the chance to go ahead from the penalty spot after Abo Eisa was brought down in the area. Eisa got up to take the spot kick and saw it saved by Paul Farman.

Barrow were close to grabbing the lead through Gerard Garner, but the breakthrough came on 37 minutes at the other end when Rose gave Grimsby the lead.

Kian Spence and substitute Emile Acquah were close to finding a leveller for Grimsby and then the Mariners keeper Jake Eastwood made a brilliant save to deny Garner from point blank range.

Substitute Donovan Wilson came off the bench to put Grimsby 2-0 up after 75 minutes, and although Sam Foley pulled one back four minutes later Barrow couldn’t salvage a point.
