Division Two’s Maryport Social pulled off a remarkable result in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League this week.
They stunned top tier champions Workington Golf Club A with a 3-2 home victory.
Ryan Ismay opened up with a win for the Golf Club A in what must have felt like the beginning of a routine victory for last season’s stand out side, but when Andrew Sharp caused an upset in the second it was game on.
A close victory for Gary Miller in the next pushed the Social side to the front at 2-1 before a thumping win by Mark Cowen in the penultimate frame ensured the fixture went to a decider.
At 2-2 a cool head is always required when a team victory is on the line, and with ice in his veins Andrew Scott delivered just that to record a result that can only be described as seismic.
Relegated Workington Veterans Club A pulled off a good home victory as they presided 3-2 over promoted Station Road Club.
The first frame saw the current county champion, Kevin Basnett, needing all his experience to put the Vets A 1-0 up and in ending the second with four outstanding pots Basnett’s team mate doubled the division 2 sides’ lead.
Frame three saw a solid comeback from Station Road’s John Teasdale to make it 2-1 and a series of missed pots on the final black eventually resulted in Chris Hunter winning the nest, so a final frame was needed to split the two sides.
Looking like second favourite for most of the game Steve Garroway hung on and in leaving his best form until the death the Vets A cueist pulled of the match win in grand style to the delight of his team-mates.
Workington’s United Club A motored to a 3-0 away lead against fellow Division One side Flimby Social but with a dogged effort the promoted side pulled it back to a very respectable 3-2.
An easy victory for Dave Chapman made it 1-0 and with Clive Lister making the most of his chances in the second the score moved to 2-0.
A break of 31 from county doubles champion, Peter O’Hagan, proved to be enough for a 3-0 United A lead before Flimby captain Geoff Banton stopped the rot to grab the fourth and peg the away side back.
The last frame saw O’Hagan’s county doubles partner, Kevin Kirkham, deliver his usual quick fire potting and in winning the frame Flimby ended the match feeling a little better.
Workington Golf Club B grabbed their first win of the season against fellow Division Two side Workington Veterans Club B, 3-2.
The home victory started better for the league newcomers however, as Dan Hallam produced a confident performance to put the Vets B outfit 1-0 up.
Golf Club B’s Ellis Brasted soon levelled with a win for 1-1 and as the experienced Karl Newton took the third the Golf Club B opened up a 2-1 lead.
Golf Club B’s Sam Smith delivered the most convincing win of the match in the next to make it 3-1and with just one frame remaining the match victory was assured.
The final point of the match was still to play for nevertheless and in digging in Luke Richardson took the frame to offer the Vets B some consolation.
The United Club B claimed an excellent 4-1 win against Division Two rivals, Whitehaven’s Rack Shack, to put a marker out against their second tier title hopes.
Former Rack Shack player Wayne Sinclair opened up with a win and as Stephen Jackson took the next the United Club moved 2-0 ahead.
A superb break of 44 by Dale Milton was enough to take frame three as the United B potter made it 3-0.
Adam Sowden stretched the United B lead even further with a victory in the fourth but it was the Rack Shack’s Andy Moore who averted the whitewash with a solid victory in the last to nick a point.
Outstanding fixture between the United Club A and Veterans Club B also took place this week with the former winning comfortably 4-1.
Dave Chapman played solidly to take the first for the United Club A and team mate Clive Lister potted superbly for the Division One side in the next as he stretched the lead to 2-0.
A solid display in a heavyweight clash for Peter O’Hagan was enough to make it 3-0 but as the Vets A took the next in confident style the score stood at 3-1.
The last frame of the night looked in the balance at the half-way point, however United A captain Andrew Mitchelhill pulled away to an eventual victory to inflict more pain on the Vets A side to finish the match at 4-1.
