Carlisle Rugby Union Club in Warwick Road has suffered damage to one of the pitches in the last 48 hours or so.

Secretary David Morton says it may result in expensive repairs using cash that could be better spent on developing rugby for the club and the community.

He went on: “Our groundsman discovered that some idiot had carved large letters in the middle of a pitch, spelling out a highly offensive and racist expression that could easily be read and understood.

“Sadly, we live in an age where there seems to be little respect for others.

“It is especially disappointing because Carlisle Rugby Club prides itself in having young people, whatever their sex, colour, creed or ability, playing rugby throughout the age ranges, and will continue to encourage such participation going forward.

“We are an all-inclusive club and welcome all comers from whatever section of society.

“Cumbria police have been informed and we are reviewing CCTV images from the weekend. If you have any information which might help identify the culprit(s) please get in touch.”
