Former Workington Reds boss Chris Willcock has joined in with the tributes to retiring defender Dan Wordsworth.
Willcock was in charge for the 2021/22 season when Reds finished runners-up in NPL West, one goal shoort of winning the title for themselves.
Wordsworth announced on Thursday he was retiring immediately after today’s game at home to Gainsborough Trinity.
When he heard the news Willcock said: “It’s sad news. I’m sure Dan will be missed in the game by everyone at Workington and all who have had the pleasure of working with him throughout his career.
“He’s a true legend of non-league and that accolade ghets banded about far too often.
“He has every aspect of a footballer you would want – in and around the dressing room, training, match days – and team night outs! Not only because of his ability but personality as well.
“I enjoyed my time working with Dan and getting to know him personally and wish him all the best in the next phase of his life.
“An individual like Goose will have some impact on the game in future, for sure you can’t keep the big man out of the beautiful game for long.”
Willcock took over home town club Stalybridge Celtic when his season ended at Reds but he left at the end of last season when they were relegated and is currently not involved in the game.
