Carlisle United secured a vital three points last night with a late winner at Brunton Park against Burton Albion.
At half-time Carlisle had slipped into the relegation zone through scores elsewhere, so Joe Garner’s 88th minute winner was doubly important.
It was a deserved win in the end against a Burton side who had gone eight games unbeaten in all competitions.
They were searching for a fifth straight win and looked to be on course when, against the run of play, Mark Helm fired them in front on 28 minutes.
The Cumbrians had won only won once in their last 11 games in all competitions, but dug deep and produced their best home display of the season to come back and win.
Garner thought he had equalised in the first-half but Tom Hamer produced a timely goal-line clearance for Burton.
They started the second-half very much on the front foot and deserved to be level on 53 minutes through Jordan Gibson’s fifth goal of the season. Latching onto a pass from Dan Butterworth he fired home a low drive.
Burton keeper Max Crocombe denied Gibson a second and in Burton’s best effort of the second-half Josh Walker fired into the side-netting.
In an exciting finish Carlisle got their noses in front when it mattered when Garner nipped in to reach a Terry Ablade header and found the back of the net.
