The Cumbrians had been closest to opening the scoring in the 11th minute but Dom Telford saw his effort strike a post.
Fortunately for Salford keeper Alex Cairns he was able to grab the rebound and , who scored his first goal for the club in midweek at Forest Green, struck a post.
Alex Cairns gratefully snatched the rebound and then came to Salford’s rescue later when he had to react smartly to keep an Elliot Watt back pass from ending up in his net.
Salford’s Matt Smith is the Football League’s top scorer but he was well policed and had no real opportunities to add to his 12-goal total.
Salford’s best opportunity fell to Matty Lund ten minutes from time when he got on the end of Declan John’s cross but blasted his shot wide.
