Lowther Castle has reinforced its historic links with a nearby school.
Lowther Endowed School in Hackthorpe is closely associated with the Lowther family.
In 1638, Richard Lowther, MP and barrister, gave the parish of Hackthorpe £100 for the salary of a schoolmaster. In the same year, Sir John Lowther – with his uncle Richard and John Teasdale the rector – founded a school.
Sir John’s contribution was to provide the land on which the school was to be built.
Recently, the school has been developing its interest in forest schooling and approached Lowther Castle about the possibility of stronger, more active links.
The gardening and conservation team at Lowther will work with the school to help expand their forest school programme, create a vegetable garden and explore and learn about the surrounding landscape on the Lowther Estate.
Vanessa Lowther, group creative director of Lowther, said: “We are really delighted to be reinforcing our bond with Lowther Endowed School. The school has a very warm-hearted atmosphere and our links with it are historic.”
Carla Weild, headteacher, said: “It is absolutely great news for us as a school that we are reinforcing our historic links with Lowther Castle & Gardens. Our Forest School is central to the learning experience of every child at our school and we look forward to working with the Lowther team to make our Forest School extra special.”
Pupils visited the Lowther Castle cafe this week to celebrate the link and serenaded customers with a medley of carols.
