Former Haven player and hall of fame member Billy Fisher has died.
Whitehaven RL Vice Presidents issued a tribute to Mr Fisher, who is understood to have died in the Bristol area.
Known as Billy the Fish, he began playing rugby union for St Benedict’s.
The presidents said: “As a talented youngster he was soon recognised as a rising talent and was selected for Cumbria Colts Rugby Union.
“He signed for Haven on July 20 1981 and six weeks later made his debut at home to Hull in the First Division. It was the first of 367 appearances he made in chocolate, blue and gold, a total only beaten by the late, great John J McKeown.
“It was a career that lasted until June 2 1996 when he played his final game on the Recreation Ground against Wakefield Trinity. He scored 68 tries in his Haven career. Starting at centre he later went on to play second row/loose forward and captained the team.
“Billy made three appearances for Cumbria. The first on the the 20th October 1987 on the Recreation Ground when Cumbria defeated the touring PNG side 22-4. His other two caps came against France in an 18-13 win at the Recre and against the touring Australians in a 10-42 defeat at Derwent Park.
“He was the sixth player to be inducted into the Vice Presidents Hall of Fame.
“The 61-year-old was a talented rugby player and a great favourite amongst Haven fans. A great centre with pace, good handling skills, great balance and step, Billy was a loyal servant to Whitehaven as shown by his 15 years in the chocolate, blue and gold. Thanks for the memories Billy.
“Our thoughts, prayers and love go out to his family and friends at this sad time.”
