Arrest after woman in her 70s dies in A66 crash

A woman has died following a collision on the A66 in West Cumbria.

The incident happened on the A66 between Bridgefoot and Broughton on Friday, December 22, at around 6.45pm.

The collision involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Suzuki Jimny.

The driver of the Suzuki, a 73-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

A passenger in the vehicle, a woman in her 70s, died from her injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 19-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by driving. He has been released on police bail.

Two passengers, a 17-year-old girl, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary. A 11-year-old girl was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with a head injury.

A fourth passenger was uninjured.
