Workington Reds have had an international visitor recently to two of their games – and she has gone down a storm!

Ella Toone, an England Lioness and Manchester United midfielder, has been at Borough Park to support her boyfriend Joe Bunney who is on loan with Reds.

Workington officials and supporters have been impressed with the 24-year-old Toone’s friendly and good-natured approach as she has been inundated by young fans asked for selfies and autographs.

Richard Lewthwaite, the Workington vice chairman, said: “Ella was fantastic with our Academy girls. Nothing was too much trouble for her.

“All the girls were delighted to be able to meet their idol and she gave them a memorable night on Tuesday.”

That was for the Macclesfield game in which Bunney made his return to the Workington line-up after missing the previous game at Ashton through suspension.

Reds’ youngsters – and the older fans – will almost certainly get another opportunity to meet Ella as Bunney has agreed to stay for a further 28 days on loan with the West Cumbrians.

Wigan-born Toone started her career briefly with Blackburn Rovers and after limited opportunities at Manchester City joined her childhood favourites Manchester United in 2018.

She has played 44 times for England and was a member of the team which reached the World Cup final, scoring the first goal in the semi-final win over Australia.
