On the busiest ever night of the season so far in Carlisle’s Thursday Night Billiards League, there were some great games and some agonisingly close ones.
ollowing on from his comprehensive win against Dave Midgley earlier this week, Peter Stanyer played Paul Cowing in the White League and had a 34 break on his way to a 253 to 195 win.
Nigel Lewthwaite was dominating the game in his quest to pull back 82 points handicap against Simon Elston. However, Simon got a second wind in the last 20 minutes and did very well to win 262 to 232. Nigel had a beat break of 36.
Brian Sloan grabbed a bonus point in a close game against Stu Burgess which finished 316-285. Brian had a 30 and 27 breaks while Stu had a 24.
Last season Neill Walby was a consistent high scorer grabbing a few bonus points in the process. He kept the trend going last night, winning 309 to 282 against John Metcalfe and is the League leader.
The closest game of the evening saw Archie Walker pip Simon Elston by one point! 318 to 317!
In the Red League Ian Cleminson got off the mark and just did enough at 305 to 294 against Tony Armstrong to earn two points for a win and a bonus point for getting over 300.
Mike Griffiths had his scoring boots on with four breaks in the 20’s and a 30, 31 and a 35. Paul Heslop was struggling with injuries, but did well to get to 282 in reply to Mike’s 372!
Mark Taylor has been in similar form to Neil Walby in the past few months and he grabbed another bonus points for a win over Dave Midgley (310-236).
Paul Scott re-joined the league after taking a break during the last season and had a good win against Peter Dean by 331 to 282.
Peter mentioned feeling he was rushing with the pressure of playing with a timer running! Without any doubt it adds a new dimension to the billiards format, rather than the usual league format of points total.
Michael Waring came straight off the snooker table having just achieved his highest break an excellent effort of 76! However the billiard skills are a bit different and League leader Archie Walker had just enough to win 272 to 265 in yet another close one!
