Windscale exit Shipowners Cup Competition

Windscale exited the Shipowners Cup Competition after a 4-0 defeat at Richmond.

The Atoms’ injury list has grown over the last few games with only eight regular first team players available to travel.

The West Cumbrian weather helped to improve that situation when the Reserves game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.  The travelling compliment was bolstered by the inclusion of seven players from the County League side, four of whom were in the starting line-up.

The Atoms took time to settle on the artificial surface conceding a goal 18 minutes into the tie.  Richmond doubled their advantage five minutes before the half time whistle to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Atoms had an opportunity to reduce the arrears early in the second half, but a shot from Reece Fretwell just cleared the Richmond crossbar.

Midway through the half the contest was virtually over when Richmond added a third and completed the scoring with 13 minutes left to play.

Despite the defeat, the game provided valuable experience for the four Reserves that started the game along with the three others that were used from the bench and all did themselves justice when involved.

Their willingness to travel provided a few more days recovery time for those not available for this game.
