Wigton made the trip to Hawcoat Park in their last away game of the Cumbria 1 league season and collected a gritty 13-5 win.
They remain unbeaten in 2024 and have one home game left against Workington to finish the league campaign.
They hope to secure a second place finish in the league, despite playing a game less than the chasing pack and playing nine away games to six home fixtures.
.The heavens opened just after kick-off and the rain didn’t stop for the full 80 minutes to make for challenging handling conditions.
Against a much bigger home pack, the Wigton forwards worked hard all game and didn’t give an inch with some solid defence shown around the ruck area.
When Wigton did have possession and went through some phases they moved the ball well and found the edges in the Hawcoat park defence, looking threatening.
Wigton opened the scoring through an Elliot Armstrong penalty from in front of the posts when a Hawcoat Park player was penalised and shown a yellow card for a high tackle.
Despite the numerical advantage, Wigton couldn’t score any more points before half time.
The second half started with Wigton having the wind behind them and they used it well to pin the home team back in their own 30 metres, a sign of the growing maturity in the team.
Following constant pressure a kick out of defence landed in the arms of fullback Stuart Carruthers, who was making a welcome return from a long injury lay off, and he went on a mazy run.
He then linked with Armstrong who sent 18 year old Euan Fletcher free to finish well in the corner. Armstrong landed the conversion from out wide to give the greens breathing space at 10-0.
A further penalty kick by Armstrong stretched the lead before Hawcoat Park gained some field position and their big forwards were rewarded with a try following a series of drives close to the line.
The conversion was missed and the game was played out without any further scores.
