A £3 million plan to turn a redundant West Cumbrian cinema into a community space has been altered – so more people can use it.
Maryport’s historic Carlton Cinema is being brought back to life in the project, managed by Cumberland Council.
Work began in September to transform it into a new creative hub, with an indoor event and performance space, studios and workshops.
It was originally given the go-ahead for an events space that could accommodate 100 people but plans want to increase that to 280 people standing or 180 people sitting.
The building, on Senhouse Street, will need extra ventilation, heating and cooling systems as a result and its potential to create nuisance noise reassessed.
A revised application, however, says that full occupancy was not anticipated to be a regular occurrence.
The Carlton Cinema revamp is being funded by Cumberland Council and the Government’s Future High Street Fund and is expected to be completed this year.
