Workington made progress in the ECB National Club Championship after a closely-contested preliminary round tie at the Valentine Ground.
The hosts beat the Burnley side Padiham by nine runs inn the first game played at the ground this season – which had been put back a week because of the weather.
Padiham won the toss and invited Workington to bat first in what is a 40-overs a side competition.
In their 40 overs Workington reached 130-9, which was built on the best partnership of the innings. Thomas Fox (33) and Jake Daniel (18) put on 46 for the first wicket before new overseas player Jack White came in at three.
He scored 11 off 18 deliveries before he was trapped leg before and then it was a case of bits and pieces through the innings to reach a defendable score.
Skipper Matty Lowden (17), Callum Sutton (13) and Adam Chambers (12) played their parts as Workington saw out their full complement and finished on 130-9.
Jack Edgar, the opening bowler for Padiham, took 4-29 from his eight overs.
Edgar also opened the Padiham innings and made 23 of an opening partnership of 29 when he was bowled by Ben Scott.
Wickets fell at regular intervals and at 74-6 the visitors seemed out of it. New arrival White ended a dangerous partnership when he had Ben Uttley bowled for 17 and although top scorer Toby Uttley-Muldoon (24no) was still there at the end they fell short at 121-7.
Regan Jackson (2-21) and Chambers (2-23) were Workington’s most successful bowlers.
Workington will travel to Garstang in the next round on Sunday.
