Maryport Athletic were crowned champions of the Cumberland County League Premier Division when they beat Whitehaven Miners Social 3-1 at Milltoft.
Two goals from Ciaran Laverty and Darren Bosward with the other goal helped Maryport round off a fantastic week for the club after they won the Benevolent Cup on Wednesday evening 2-1 against Wigton Harriers. Lewis Park netted the Miners’ goal.
Athletic manager and club founder Karl Skillen said: All in all it’s been a good season so far for Maryport Athletic open age team and the lads in the squad have deserved this for all the hard work and dedication they’ve put in over the last nine months.
“After a poor start to the league they’ve dug in and kept the pressure on Aspatria (our nearest rivals) as well as progressing in cup competitions which included a county cup semi final against Workington Reds first team and winning the Benevolent Cup for the second year running.
“Going into our last league game of the season we knew a win against Whitehaven Miners, who have been tough opposition all season, would win the title.

“The performance wasn’t great, and Miners set out to make it a tough game, but the lads kept going and got the deserved 3-1 win.
“Hopefully as a club we can keep building for the future. We have a strong youth set-up and have had lots of young players debut for the first team across the season. Our under-18s have also brought home some silverware this season.
“I’d like to say a massive thanks to Justin, Danny, Adam, all our youth coaches and the committee and Maryport Rugby league club for giving us a place to play from.
“Now it’s on to the next few weeks with a good few Cup fixtures and fingers crossed for a couple more finals. If not, the lads have still had an incredible season and we are all proud of them.”
