Kells snatched a dramatic 11-10 win at Heworth in the National Conference Premier Division.
It was the game that should have opened the season in March but was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
Kells coach Peter Smith said: “It was actually their first home game because they’ve been working on the pitch virtually since then.
“I think they now have the other West Cumbrian sides, Wath Brow and Egremont, down there in quick succession.”
A drop goal from Grant Gainford three minutes from time settled a very close contest and put Kells level on points with their two West Cumbrian neighbours.
“It was a good effort because we had to change our system a bit as we had a few changes from the previous week, but the lads who came in did a good job.
“Dominic Wear had an outstanding game and he’s hit a rich vein of form for us and his half-back partner James Ennis was also very good,” said Smith.

Kells had taken the lead after 24 minutes with the opening try from second rower Clarke Chambers and Wear added the extras.
Heworth had pulled back four points before the break with an unconverted try from Liam Richmond.
Six minutes into the second-half Heworth substitute Liam Watling got over for a try and Jack Sadler’s conversion gave them a 10-6 lead which they held until ten minutes from the end.
Aaron Burns pulled Kells level with an unconverted try out wide and it looked as though Kells would register their third draw of the season until full-back Gainford popped over the late winner, a 25-metre drop goal.

Only six games were played in the Conference over the weekend and Barrow Island were also involved with a Division Two clash at leaders Shaw Cross Sharks.
It was the Sharks who retained their 100% record with a seventh straight win, taking the match 34-10.
It had been 24-0 at one point in the first-half but the Islanders closed the gap with two tries by Dan Wright and a conversion from Sam Jones.
However, the Sharks were able to add a couple more tries in the final quarter of the game to tie up the points.
