Young carers receive special gifts

Two Cumbrian young carers, who are fans of Liverpool FC, received a special gift thanks to the Freemasons.

Andrew Jackson, 17, and Kyle Pennington, nine, both help care for their siblings.

At a special presentation in Kendal the boys were gifted with two Liverpool Football Club shirts signed by the team of 2022-23.

Chris Gray and Peter Graveson, of the Cumberland and Westmorland Freemasons, handed the special gifts to the boys at Carer Support South Lake’s offices on Beezon Road.

Andrew helps care for his sister, Emma, 14. Andrew said: “I am a big Liverpool fan, and this is a very special gift to receive.

“I have just passed my driving test, so I am looking forward to being able to take my sister out more.”

Kyle helps look after his brother Jayden, seven, who has autism spectrum disorder. Kyle is also under assessment for autism. Both brothers come from a family of lifelong Liverpool fans, with grandparents from Liverpool.

The boys are also having a tour of Liverpool’s ground, Anfield.

The brothers go to school together, and Kyle is always there to support Jayden.

Carer Support South Lakes business development manager Cheryl Duckworth said: “We are very grateful to the Freemasons for these gifts, which our young carers have received. It is so good to recognise the caring young people in our community are doing.”

Young carer support practitioner Nicola Edmondson said: “There are more than 8,000 people under 18 years old in Cumbria who are providing unpaid care for a family member or friend.

“We can provide a wide range of support to our young carers aged between five and 18, which may include one-to-one support to help with their schooling, further education or family support, counselling, finance or transport issues, or group support opportunities. We also support our Young Adult Carers, aged 18 to 24.”
