Traffic is queuing on the A66 and M6 as people are out and about this bank holiday.
National Highways said the A66 westbound between the junctions with the A685 and the A6 and eastbound between the junctions with the A592 and the M6 are congested.
Drivers are backing up around Junction 40 of the M6.
It said there were currently 15 minutes of delays.
Traffic is expected to return to normal on the westbound carriageway at around 1.45pm and on the eastbound carriageway between 2pm and 2.15pm.
