Allotments have been given to a South Cumbrian village charity by Lake District Estates.
The land at Roanhead on the Furness Peninsula has been gifted to Askam Village Hall Charity, also known as the Lots Association.
This week it formally received the gift of several allotments, part of the Lots Pond and a small area of surrounding land close to Askam-in-Furness.
The charity, locally based and managed has a long history of providing recreational and other facilities for residents in the local area.
Mike Cumming, trustee of the Askam Hall Village Charity, said: “We are delighted to receive this gift from Lake District Estates.
“The newly acquired allotments and a significant part of the Lots Pond will fit perfectly alongside our existing ownership and will enable more local residents to enjoy the benefits of an allotment. Our allotments are used for a variety of purposes and the benefits of fresh air and physical activity linked to allotments are well known. This gift will also guarantee the future of this land for the benefit of local people.”
Peter Hensman, president of Lake District Estates, added: “I’m very pleased we have been able to donate this land to the Lots Association. It does excellent work providing facilities and activities for local residents and we are delighted to support them in this small way.”
Lake District Estates originally acquired the Roanhead estate over 50 years ago and this change in ownership ends its association with the land.
