Carlisle United have re-signed defender Aaron Hayden on a two year deal after the expiration of his contract with Wrexham.
The 27-year-old left the Blues to join the Welsh club for the start of the 2021/22 season after paying 73 times for United.
He has gone on to play 81 times for Wrexham and enjoyed two promotions with the Racecourse Ground side.
He had joined United on trial and initially signed a one-year contract in July 2019, which was renewed in January 2020 for a further 18-months, prior to securing another 12-month spell at the club.
A clause was triggered at the end of the 20/21 season after showing leadership qualities on and off the pitch as United’s vice-captain.
Croydon-born Hayden had a period in the youth system at Chelsea, before moving north to join Wolves’ Academy as a 16-year-old in 2015. He then had several non-league loan spells with Hemel Hempstead Town, Bromley and Telford.
He had been on loan for almost 18-months with Southern League Premier Division Central side Stourbridge before joining Carlisle on trial.
Manager Paul Simpson told the United website: “We’re delighted that Aaron has agreed to return to us. He comes back to the club with more experience under his belt and two promotions. I think he’ll be a great addition to the group.
“As soon as we knew he was going to be available, he was a player we targeted early. We’re delighted to have been able to get this agreed ahead of other clubs.
“We are now continuing to look to strengthen the squad, ahead of an exciting new season.”
The move is subject to ratification from the FA and EFL.
