Despite being relegated the fans of Carlisle United gave them tremendous support on their travels.

Bottom of League One and set for a quick return to the EFL’s basement Division, Carlisle were the ninth best supported side away from home.

Over the season, and despite some really long trips, Carlisle’s away support averaged out at 1,018.

That was bettered by eight clubs – Barnsley 1,033, Charlton Athletic 1,057, Oxford United 1,087, Blackpool 1,111, Reading 1,229, Bolton Wanderers 1,742, Portsmouth 1,788 and Derby County 2,110.

Manager Paul Simpson regularly praised the travelling army of United fans for their loyal support, despite the poor results on the field.

The worst supported team, away from home, was Fleetwood Town (175) and they will also be going down to League Two with Carlisle next season.

Burton Albion (309), who just avoided the drop, and Cheltenham Town (368), who will be relegated, were the next lowest.

The fourth team to drop into League Twow Port Vale had an average away attendance of 853.

Other average attendances for away trips were Wycombe Wanderers -500, Shrewsbury Town  562, Exeter City 584, Cambridge United 706, Lincoln City 825, Northampton Town 839, Peterborough United 896, Leyton Orient 941, Bristol Rovers 946 and Wigan Athletic 988.
