Cockermouth maintained their fine winning start to the new season with the most important success so far.
Win number six came at Sandair against Keswick, who have also started the season in fine style.
Cockermouth finished on top, winning by five wicket, and still had 7.3 overs in hand when they reached their target.
Keswick had won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that seemed to have back-fired at 28-3 with three of their big guns back in the pavilion.
Skipper Will Atkinson (2), pro Risith Upamal (first ball 0) and Cumbria county batsman Greg Cameron (0) all perished with young Josh Brown finishing his five over spell with 2-19.
Opener Stephen Hindmarch adopted the role of sheet anchor and he proceeded to bat through the 50 overs with a valuable and patient 66no.
There was support down the order from Glen Weightman (32) and Ben Sharp (26) so that Keswick, with the help of 29 extras (22 of them wides) reached 183-7.
Although Cockermouth lost young opener Regan Scott (6) and sub pro Chirag Khurana (10) there were plenty of runs at the top of the order.
Alex Grainger (32) led the way but it was really a fourth wicket stand of 99 between skipper Matt Sempill (57) and Greg Platten (45) that put them within touching distance of victory.
Although both went in quick succession Cockermouth were close enough to the finish line to see it through. Weightman took 3-49.
Champions Carlisle stayed on Cockermouth’s tail with their fifth straight win after that opening day defeat to Keswick.
Sub pro Dan Salpietro (64), Zephania Arinaitwe (26) and Nico Watt (21) were the mainstays for Carlisle after they close to bat and made 200-9.
Jordan Postlethwaite took 4-23 for Haverigg who were looking to bounce back after a bad defeat to Egremont last week when they were skittled for just 32.
Well they did much better with the bat this time but not enough to threaten the Carlisle total.
Drew Postlethwaite (36), Akshay Chandran (28) and Jordan Postlethwaite (24) led the way but they eventually fell short on 145-9 after their 50 overs.
Johnny Westgarth took 4-26 for Carlisle from his 10 overs.
Egremont were unable to follow-up that good win at Haverigg when they lost their Copeland derby at home to Whitehaven by 167 runs.
The visitors were put into bat and with just seven balls to come they were dismissed for 230.
Chase Young set the tone for Whitehaven with 78 off 70 deliveries and it included 11 fours and three sixes.
Skipper Stephen Holliday weighed in with 55 from 58 balls while Mathhew Hunter took 5-42.
For the first time this season Egremont’s overseas recruit Raghav Kupar failed with the bat and that was bad news for the hosts. Skipper Cody Scott (20) was the only batsman to reach double figures.
Terance Warde, the Whitehaven pro was their most successful bowler with 3-11 from 8.3 overs.
Cleator were singing the praises of new pro Rishabh Tiwari after he guided them through to their first win of the season at Workington, getting home by three wickets.
Skipper Tom Sharpe said: “It was a fantastic innings because he had to show real class and patience, both with the top order and the lower.
“He never looked in any trouble, aided superbly by the lower-middle order to stay with him while the Workington attack applied serious pressure.
“After taking four wickets, to bat like that and win us the game was terrific and we are delighted for him as he has come into the club over the last week and been a breath of fresh air.
“He has settled in unbelievably well as a cricketer and team-mate and the lads were over the moon for him.
“Unfortunately he has to go back for two weeks for some selection game but will be back to play after that. He has settled in incredibly well and is a fantastic person.”
After winning the toss Sharpe decided to ask Workington to bat first and he would have been pleased with the result.
The home side were bowled-out for 118 in 46.2 overs, and the total would have been considerably less had it not been for Australian Jack White (55) and David Pearce (29) who steadied the ship at 48-5.
Tiwari took 4-28 from his ten overs and David Blackwell took 3-24.
Ben Scott removed Ben Wishart and Steve Lee to leave Cleator 2-1 but Tiwari had support from Sharpe (17), along with James Rogers (10) and eventually got his side over the line with a master-class innings of 62no.
Scott took 4-26 from 10 for Workington who were slipping to their fourth successive defeat and are now eighth in the table.
