Whitehaven CEO Barry Morgan is to step down after tomorrow’s Betfred Championship game at home to Dewsbury Rams.
In a brief statement he said: “It is with a heavy heart that I make this decision but health issues and family commitments coupled with increasing demands of the club to generate income outside of games have taken their toll.
“I would like to wish the current board and all those associated with WRLFC the best of luck for the remaining part of the season.
“I will continue to help out if required around the ground but not as part of the board of directors.
“A younger person with a fresh set of legs is what this great club needs to move it forward.
“I leave this club having reduced, with assistance of this great board of directors, numerous debts from when I joined the club in May 2023 to give this club a fighting chance at survival in this ever-increasing difficult championship.”
The 68-year-old had retired from his job at Sellafield to join the Whitehaven board and five months later take on the role of CEO.
At the time the club was within three days of closing its doors.
Since then he has overseen a dramatic reduction in the debt which the new board had inherited last year.
“I will be attending the AGM next month to answer any questions that shareholders want to ask of me, then I will be standing aside.
“I am a lifelong Whitehaven supporter, though, and I will continue to follow them from the terraces and will offer my held for any maintenance issues around the ground,” he told Cumbria Crack.
