Charlie Wyke is back at Carlisle United after agreeing a two-year deal ahead of a second spell with the club.
The 31-year-old played 89 League and Cup games for United during his first spell with the club after signing in January 2015 from Middlesbrough.
He hadn’t played for the first team there but had spells on loan at Kettering, Hartlepool (twice) and AFC Wimbledon before joining the Blues.
Wyke signed for Bradford City for an undisclosed fee on transfer deadline day in January 2017 and for the Bantams he scored 29n goals in 56 games before he was sold for £400,000 to Sunderland ahead of the 2018/19 season.
At the end of the 2020/21 season he was named Sunderland’s Player of the Year and included in the EFL League One Team of the Season.
That prompted a move into the Championship with Wigan Athletic in July 2021 where 51 League games resulted in 14 goals before going on loan towards the end of last season to Rotherham where he scored once in ten games for the relegated Yorkshiremen.
Having been released by Wigan he has been snapped up again by Carlisle and manager Paul Simpson is delighted.
He told the club website: “It’s something that has been talked about for a while. We tried to get him to come to us in January but he wanted to stay at the highest level he could and ended up going to the Championship.
“We’ve been talking on and off during summer, but like all players, Charlie wanted to wait and see what other offers he got. It was clear there were other clubs at a higher level who were keen but he is excited to come back and help take us forward again. We’re delighted to have him in with us.
“Everyone can see from his record that he is a proven goal scorer and we’re all really looking forward to working with him.”
