We asked you to submit your questions to candidates standing in the 2024 General Election.
From all your submissions, we chose 10 that represented the broad issues you wanted answers to.
We asked every candidate we had contact details for to respond.
We’ll be publishing them in the run-up to the General Election with the responses from the candidates who replied from each constituency.
These are the answers are from candidates standing in the Barrow & Furness constituency.
Your question:
What will you do to stop run-off from animal agriculture polluting lakes/rivers?
Adrian Waite, Liberal Democrats
Protecting our precious natural environment lies at the heart of the Liberal Democrat approach.
Everyone should be able to enjoy open green spaces, clean blue rivers and the beauty of the coast.
However, this enjoyment is too often spoilt by pollution, including agricultural pollution, that is also a threat to nature and the environment.
We would ensure that our farming and food system is on an environmentally sustainable footing by:
- Ensuring farmers receive proper, independent advice about how to transition to new environmental farm payments schemes, with proper funding for advice services.
- Supporting farmers to reduce the pollution of rivers, streams and lakes.
- Working with and rewarding farmers to reduce the use of costly imported and environmentally harmful artificial fertilisers and pesticides, helping to protect bees and other pollinators.
- Introducing a Research and Innovation Fund to support new and emerging technologies in the sector including the development of alternative proteins in which Britain can become a world leader.
Barry Morgan, Reform UK
Environmental pollution whether by water companies or by agricultural enterprises will be investigated and those responsible prosecuted with stiff penalties levied.
Lisa Morgan, Party of Women
Not my core concern for this election.
