Labour has swept the board in four of Cumbria’s five seats in the General Election.

Voters in Barrow & Furness, Carlisle, Penrith & Solway and Workington & Whitehaven chose to back Keir Starmer’s party in a night of huge defeats across the country for the Conservatives.

Westmorland & Lonsdale remains to be held by the Liberal Democrats, with former party leader Tim Farron re-elected.

It was all change for this election, as the boundaries for the county’s constituencies were redrawn.

The new MPs for Cumbria are:

  • Barrow & Furness: Michelle Scrogham (Lab)
  • Carlisle: Julie Minns (Lab)
  • Penrith & Solway: Markus Campbell-Savours (Lab)
  • Westmorland & Lonsdale: Tim Farron (Lib Dem)
  • Whitehaven & Workington: Josh MacAlister (Lab)

The first seat to declare was Whitehaven & Workington at around 2.15am and the final constituency was Westmorland & Lonsdale at 4.25am.

Reform UK – whose leader Nigel Farage was elected to represent Clacton – came second in the Whitehaven & Workington constituency and third in each of the others in Cumbria.

Labour has a majority in Parliament and Kier Starmer is the new Prime Minister.

It will be the first time there is a Labour government since 2010.

Pundits said turnout for the election was low overall – around 61%.
