A stunning Cumbrian Victorian hall could be yours for £3 million.

Calthwaite Hall, between Penrith and Carlisle, was once owned by the colourful fifth Duke of Devonshire – who is documented to have lived simultaneously with his socialite wife and mistress and has been compared to the stately homes of the popular Netflix drama Bridgerton, with a history steeped in aristocratic society.

The 11-bedroom mansion house, which sits in 7.5 acres of grounds, was last on the market for offers over £4m in 2022.

It has been home to high society, including politicians, viscounts, earls, and trade magnates, for almost 200 years.

The Grade II-listed property – with adjoining lodge resort and events business – has now been listed with estate agency David Britton Estates for £3m. The mansion house by itself is for sale for £2m.

David Britton, managing director, said: “Calthwaite Hall is a piece of living history that offers an unparalleled opportunity to own a significant landmark and enjoy the lifestyle that comes with it.

“It is one of the county’s finest properties and stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of refined country living. Its diverse offerings not only ensure a continuation of its storied legacy but also promise substantial income potential for its future owners.

“It is our absolute pleasure to be the agency of choice for this remarkable property, which would indeed not be out of place in Bridgerton.”

The property has a purpose-built orangery, with Italian marble flooring, which can host up to 100 guests.

The main house exudes grandeur with its original Victorian elements and the modern comforts of a luxury dwelling. The hall’s magnificent bespoke staircase, bathed in natural light from the roof lantern above, sets the tone for the opulent interiors that feature throughout. Elegant reception rooms adorned with ornate fireplaces and historical detailing offer perfect settings for both relaxation and social gatherings.

Beyond the main residence, the detached orangery is surrounded by a Mediterranean-inspired garden. This space, along with the additional outbuildings, offers flexible options for business or private use, all within the estate’s meticulously landscaped gardens that boast manicured lawns, mature trees, and a swimming pool.

For those with an equestrian interest, the property offers a floodlit manège, stable block, and tack room.

David added: “Calthwaite Hall captures the essence of historical prestige but also offers a modern lifestyle aligned with luxury and exclusivity.

“This property promises an extraordinary living experience and a lucrative business venture, making it a coveted jewel in the crown of Cumbria.”
