Lake District bistro among 100 best restaurants in UK

A Lake District bistro with beds has been named among the 100 best restaurants in the UK by a prestigious guide.

The Yan at Broadrayne, on the edge of Grasmere, is the only Cumbrian venue to feature in the Good Food Guide’s 100 Best Local Restaurants.

It is the second successive year The Yan has earned a place on the list, which sets out to uncover the very best local restaurants across every region of the UK.

Restaurants are nominated by the public then independently and anonymously assessed by Good Food Guide editors and inspectors before making the list.

This year, a record 60,000 nominations were received from readers.

Inspectors said: “The Lake District is well-fed, but proper restaurants serving simple, straightforward cooking are surprisingly hard to find. All the more reason to treasure The Yan at Broadrayne, which goes the extra mile on food, service, and surroundings. It is a welcoming prospect on all fronts.

“The Yan dining room overlooks the fells of Helm Crag and Dunmail Raise, though the vibe feels more Scandi chic than Lakeland cosy.

“Herdwick lamb from the surrounding fields appears in several guises: as a rib with Cajun-spiced sweetcorn purée; minted and wrapped in cured ham with pea mash; and best of all, the signature shepherd’s pie, in which the meat, (slowly braised to fall-apart tenderness) is topped with gorgeously smooth and soft cheesy mash.”

Dave Keighley, Sally Keighley, Georgina Keighley-King and Peter Keighley-King

The Yan is celebrating its fifth anniversary in a year that has already seen the family-owned business triumph as Cumbria’s Best Casual Dining Restaurant at the Cumbria Tourism Awards, plus securing a Bronze Award for Best Ethical, Responsible, and Sustainable Tourism business at the national Visit England Awards for Excellence.

Georgina Keighley-King, operations director at The Yan, said: “We’re absolutely blown away to have made the UK’s top 100 local restaurants for the second year running. It’s a real honour and a credit to every one of the fantastic team we have here at The Yan.

“And of course, it’s made even more special to be partly based on reader nominations – those lovely guests and diners who have been fabulous enough to share their feedback and experiences of The Yan. Their support, backed up by reviews from independent inspectors at the Good Food Guide, genuinely means the world to us.”
