Leisure centres in Cumbria are supporting National Fitness Day by offering free activities.

Now in its 13th year, National Fitness Day is run by leisure industry body UKActive and aims to encourage the nation to get moving and shine a light on the many benefits that being active can offer. It is tomorrow, Wednesday September 18.

Leisure centres run by Better are holding free activities including free gym and swimming sessions from 6.30am at Penrith Leisure Centre, Appleby Leisure Centre, Kendal Leisure Centre, Ulverston Leisure Centre and the Sands Leisure Centre in Carlisle; and free gym sessions at Workington Leisure Centre, Whitehaven Sports Centre and Copeland Pool Fitness Centre.

Free fitness classes include yoga, aqua aerobics, group cycle, HITT, circuit training and legs, bums and tums at Penrith Leisure Centre; HITT and group cycle at Appleby Leisure Centre; aqua aerobics, body conditioning and Pilates at Kendal Leisure Centre; group cycle, power pump, Pilates, functional fitness, strength, yoga, body conditioning, combat, circuit training and aqua aerobics at the Sands Leisure Centre in Carlisle; Pilates and circuits at Workington Leisure Centre; and strength and conditioning at Whitehaven Sports Centre.

Derek Jones, of GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates Better leisure centres across Cumbria said: “It has never been more important for the public to embrace activity and fitness as an aid to mental and physical health.

“So we are delighted to join this year’s National Fitness Day Campaign. No matter your state of fitness, taking small steps to be more active more often will have huge benefits throughout your life – and that journey could start on National Fitness Day when you try something new.”

Anyone wishing to book a free National Fitness Day pass must sign up ahead of their visit via https://www.better.org.uk/national-fitness-day
