Danny Butterworth has point to prove against Carlisle United

Mike Williamson will lead his side for the first time on Saturday at Swindon – and comes up against a man on a mission!

Danny Butterworth, the 25-year-old, left Carlisle on Deadline Day to sign for the Robins and has said that he has a point to prove against his former club.

Coincidentally he scored his first Swindon goal against Carlisle’s county rivals Barrow – a late strike which earned a point in Cumbria.

Butterworth, 25, only had one season at Carlisle notching four goals in a total of 31 appearances.

Butterworth has said in interviews for the club media that despite enjoying his time at Carlisle, and wishing the players the best for the campaign, he would like to prove a point against his former employers.

He said: “It was a really difficult year last year, we lost a lot of games and got relegated, so that is never a nice feeling or something you want to be involved in.

“But I am sure that the lads will turn it around this year and have a good season, so good luck to them.

“I just look at it as proving a point and things like that and I hope I do well against them.”

He went on to say that part of his reason for joining Swindon was the desire to feel wanted again.

He said: “It was alright, a good experience for me and it is a great changing room up there and things like that.

“There are probably other things behind closed doors that is probably why it didn’t really happen for me, to be honest.

“I had a really good chat with the gaffer Mark Kennedy. He phoned me up and I think that is what I need at the minute, someone who believes in me and wants me to play for them.

“So I was more than happy to come down when I had that conversation with him.

“It probably hasn’t happened being wanted over the past but the gaffer here now has put a lot of faith in me.”

Butterworth joined Man United as a 17-year-old before switching to Blackburn Rovers where he spent five years, but only made 14 appearances.

He had two loan moves – to Fleetwood (12 games, 1 goal) and Port Vale  (31, 3) – before being released and joining Carlisle last season.
