Drivers are warned that roadworks will start on Workington Viaduct later this month.
Resurfacing will start on the A597 from Monday, October 28, and is expected to last three weeks, weather permitting.
Work will take place Mondays to Fridays, from 7am to 7pm, with no weekend work planned.
It will be reopened to traffic on weekends.
It will be carried out in three phases, with each lasting around five days and diversions will be in place for each stage.
Although some delays are expected, access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.
The work is planned as follows:
- Phase one: When the road closure is in operation a single lane will remain open for traffic between Havelock Road (U2532) and Tesco (A597).
- Phase two: Traffic from Tesco (A597) will be able to use the lower side of the viaduct, with access to either Station Road (B5297) or the continuation of the A597 towards the Clay Flatts Industrial Estate.
- Phase three: The viaduct will be fully open in both directions for all traffic on the A597 and B5297, except for access from Havelock Road (U2532), which will remain restricted.
Digital signs will be installed on major routes leading to the viaduct to alert drivers.
During the closure, Stagecoach will operate a reduced bus service within the vicinity of the work. For any queries regarding bus routes, passengers are advised to contact Stagecoach directly.
Access to the train station car park will be via Clay Flatts Roundabout during phase one. After this phase, the road will be open in both directions.
Waste collections will not be affected in residential areas.
Cumberland Council said businesses will remain open as usual throughout the work.
