Storm Ashley: Flood warnings and alerts for Cumbria

Storm Ashley is making its way across Cumbria and flood warnings and alerts are in place for the county.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning until around midnight tonight as forecasters are predicting strong winds across Cumbria.

Electricity North West is putting plans in place to monitor the network and ensure supplies and teams are available to respond if the storm causes damage to overhead lines.

Flood warnings and alerts have also been issued for across the county.

Flood warnings – mean act now – are in place for:

Barrow, around Biggar, Rampside and Vickerstown

High tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause flooding this afternoon.

Highest tide level is expected at 1.45pm. Flooding is possible several hours either side of this time.

Areas most at risk include West Shore Park, Biggar, Biggar Bank, Ocean Road, Carr Lane, Vickerstown Promenade and Rampside areas.

Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

Flood warning area: Barrow in Furness including West Shore Park, Biggar Bank Road, Biggar, Tummer Hill Marshes, Rampside, Roa Island and Vickerstown.

Barrow, between North and South Walney, Cavendish and Ramsden Docks

High tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause flooding this afternoon.

Highest tide level is expected at 1.45pm. Flooding is possible several hours either side of this time.

Areas most at risk include West Shore Park, Biggar, Biggar Bank, Ocean Road and Carr Lane areas. Vickerstown, Cavendish and Ramsden Dock areas.

Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous. 

Flood warning area: Barrow in Furness including West Shore Park, Biggar Bank Road, Tummer Hill Marshes, Rampside, Roa Island, Vickerstown, Cavendish and Ramsden Docks, Salthouse Mills and Roosecote Power Station.

St Bees Head to Haverigg, along the coast from North Head to Haverigg

High tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause flooding this afternoon.

Highest tide level is expected at 2pm. Flooding is possible several hours either side of this time.

Areas most at risk include beachfront properties at Coulderton, Nethertown and Braystones. Low lying properties at Saltcoats, Ravenglass, A595 at Muncaster Mill Bridge and the Esk Estuary.

Flood gates at Ravenglass are being closed.

Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

Flood warning area: St Bees Head to Haverigg including Seascale, Ravenglass, Saltcoats and beach front properties at Coulderton, Nethertown and Braystones.

Silloth to St Bees including Maryport, Flimby, Workington and Whitehaven

High tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause flooding this afternoon.

Highest tide level is expected at 2pm. Flooding is possible several hours either side of this time.

Areas most at risk include Allonby, Maryport, Flimby, Workington, Parton and Whitehaven areas.

Flood gates at Flimby and Maryport have been closed.

Flood warning area: Silloth to St Bees including Maryport, Flimby, Workington and Whitehaven.

Gretna to Silloth including Port Carlisle, Skinburness and Rockcliffe

High tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause flooding this afternoon.

Highest tide level is expected at 2pm. Flooding is possible several hours either side of this time.

Areas most at risk include Rockcliffe, Longburgh, Port Carlisle, Bowness-on-Solway, Anthorn, Angerton and Skinburness areas.

Flood gates at Skinburness Marsh have been closed.

Flood alerts

Coast from Gretna to Silloth

Flooding of roads and low lying land is possible.

High tide levels are expected on Coastline from Gretna to Silloth at 2pm, with flooding of roads and low lying land possible several hours either side of this time.

Flood gates at Skinburness Marsh have been closed.

Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster

Flooding of roads and low lying land is possible, property flooding is not expected.

Rivers are responding to rainfall and flooding of low lying areas is possible. Rainfall is easing and will move away from the county from lunchtime today, when river levels will peak and start to recede.

Areas most at risk include Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster and other watercourses, from Grasmere to Grange-over-Sands including low lying areas around Ambleside, Skelwith Bridge, Windermere, Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Backbarrow, Cark and Cartmel.

Debris from weed screens is being cleared and monitoring rainfall and river levels.

Flood alert area: Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster and other watercourses, from Grasmere to Grange-over-Sands including low lying areas around Ambleside, Skelwith Bridge, Windermere, Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Backbarrow, Cark and Cartmel.
