Carlisle’s struggles on their return to League Two continued last night at Walsall.
The Blues slipped to a 3-1 defeat and stay marooned with bottom side Morecambe in the drop zone.
The gap in class between second top Walsall and second bottom Carlisle was there for all to see.
It didn’t help that United conceded in the second minute. Hardly the confidence builder they needed away from home against promotion contenders.
Harrison Neal was robbed on the edge of his penalty area by Jamille Matt and a rolled pass to Nathan Lowe was despatched beyond Harry Lewis and into the net off the far post.
They were clearly the more dangerous side even though Carlisle did see more of the ball, but they had to wait until the second-half to increase their advantage.
Again Matt was involved with a perfect knock-down for midfielder Jamie Jellis to race onto and fire a first time shot past Lewis.
It was game set and match on 56 minutes when the influential Matt thumped home the third after Carlisle had failed to clear a Taylor Allen free kick.
Nine minutes from the end Carlisle did pull a goal back when Jon Mellish touched in a low corner which somehow got through a crowd of players.
It was purely a statistical addition and Walsall could have had two more late on but substitute Danny Johnson wasted two glorious opportunities to add to Carlisle’s misery.
