Plans for a new activity and leisure facility in Millom and Haverigg have taken another step forward.
A planning application has been submitted for the project, which will include a swimming pool, sports hall and fitness studios within a community and leisure hub.
The facility is part of the Millom Town Deal Activating Community Health project and is one of four projects that make up the Millom Town Deal which secured £20.6m from the UK Government’s Town’s Fund alongside a further £8.7m in match funding.
Flimby-based Thomas Armstrong has been appointed to undertake the design and build by the Millom Town Deal Board and Cumberland Council to deliver the scheme.
Cumberland Council said the hub aimed to improve levels of community health and well-being by providing residents with a modern, multi-purpose and fully inclusive facility and attract visitors to the town which will also support the long-term financial sustainability of this new leisure facility alongside increased footfall and a boost to overall levels of spending within local businesses.
David Savage, chair of Millom Town Deal Board, said: “This I am sure is the news the community has been patiently waiting to hear as we now seek to secure the next big milestone for the Leisure Complex, with the submission of the planning application.
“Subject to planning approval, we can look forward to a shovel in the ground in early 2025.
“This long-awaited news will build confidence that the leisure complex is actively moving forward and will significantly contribute to this town’s offer as an attractive place to live, work and visit.”
Work continues on other parts of the Town Deal projects and momentum continues to build across this transformational programme, Cumberland Council said.
