Ten-man Carlisle United took League One side Wigan Athletic to extra-time in the first round of the FA Cup.
But the effort proved too much as Wigan scored twice in the added 30 minutes to go into the draw for the second round.
It was a brave effort from the Cumbrians after Ethan Robson was sent off in the 14th minute for a dangerous tackle.
Carlisle were very much in the contest in the first half and Wigan needed some heroics from keeper Sam Tickle to keep them on terms, particularly when he managed to claw away off his line a header from Aaron Hayden.
Wigan were more dominant in the second-half after several changes and they should have gone in front when Thelo Aasgaard headed wide as Jonny Smith’s superb cross was asking to be slotted home.
Carlisle goalkeeper Gabe Breeze, brought in to replace Harry Lewis, made a couple of excellent stops late on to take the tie to extra time.
The breakthrough came right at the end of the first 15 minutes when Scott Smith turned home a cross from the dangerous Silko Thomas.
Then Tickle had to work hard to keep his side in front, saving from Dominic Sadi and Luke Armstrong.
Finally, as Carlisle had all ten men up for a late corner in search of an equaliser Wigan knocked the ball clear and Jonny Smith wrapped up the in the 121st minute as he rolled the ball into an empty net.
