Cumbrian puppet theatre to take centre stage in Channel 5 show

TV star Susan Calman met puppets galore when she popped in at Cumbria’s Upfront Gallery and Arts Venue for an episode of the Channel 5 show Grand Day Out, set to air tonight.

The show features the well-known comedian and presenter touring the country in a colourful campervan, visiting a host of unusual attractions all over the UK.

She visited the Upfront puppet theatre, at Hutton-in-the-Forest, owned and run by John and Elaine Parkinson, over the summer.

Susan was able to get hands-on experience of puppeteering during a production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Upfront is one of only a handful of puppet theatres in England, and also features an extensive puppet museum.

With the festive season approaching, preparations are well under way for Upfront’s Christmas production of Aladdin, which is set to run from December 8 to December 29.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out is set to be screened tonight, Friday, November 22, at 8pm on Channel 5 and will also be available on catch-up at My5TV.
