Storm Bert washout for non-league football

Apart from Workington’s fine 3-1 win in deepest Derbyshire at Mickleover, it was a wash-out for the rest of the county’s non-league sides.

In the Northern League the much-anticipated derby clash at Gillford Park between Carlisle City and Kendal Town was an early casualty.

First the frost, and then heavy rain threatened to turn the pitch into a quagmire, so not much doubt about the postponement.

Penrith’s game at Newcastle Benfield was also called off and only one game – a Second Division clash at Sunderland West End against Horden CW – went ahead in the Northern League.

Holker Old Boys were due to take on Darwen at home in North West Counties Division One North but that was postponed and in the only game played second-in-the-table Nelson lost 2-0 to Euxton Villa.

In the West Lancashire League both west Cumbrian sides were saved wasted journeys as the respective Richardson Cup games for Cleator Moor Moor Celtic at Fulwood Amateurs and Whitehaven at Turton were both called off.

Windscale were happy that they were not due to be playing in the Wearside League.

In the Cumberland County League all the scheduled fixtures were postponed.
