Wigton travelled to Egremont missing a few of their regular starters and managed to withstand a committed home team to maintain their unbeaten start to the league campaign.
The players who were involved showed great composure and fitness to highlight the Greens growing squad strength with a 37-22 win.
Playing with the slope in the first half, Wigton went through several phases of play trying to stretch the home defence.
Following a penalty for offside Elliot Armstrong stroked it over to give Wigton an early lead.
From the kick-off Wigton again tried to stretch the defence but the pass was well read by the Egremont defence and the home flanker intercepted to race over unopposed for a 5-3 lead.
It went from bad to worse for Wigton as a spilled ball was quickly picked up and great hands from the Egremont backs put the left winger clear and finished it well in the corner for a good try.
The majority of possession was with Wigton and once they identified the space to attack into they looked threatening.
Following a quick tap penalty and good support play Tom Maughan crashed over for an unconverted score to cut the deficit to two points.
The Wigton coaching staff made a couple of changes and introduced last season’s Colts player of the year Charlie Scott into the game. He made an immediate impact with some strong carries and offloads to lift the team.
On the stroke of half time Wigton moved the ball well, releasing young winger Jordan Wood and he went 50 metres beating three defenders for a well taken try. Armstrong added the extras to give his side a 15-10 lead at the break.
This proved to be the turning point as Wigton came out energised for the second half and dominated possession and territory.
A tiring home pack could not disrupt the speed of ruck ball as well as they had been doing.
Following a burst up-field from Charlie Bell, captain Ryan Wannop took the inside ball and galloped 25 metres for the score with Armstrong converting.
Promising young back rower Bell then made another burst up the blind side and this time finished it off himself.
The next score came from good hands along the backline that released Roco Okesene into space and he scored in the corner on his return from a three-month break. The conversion attempt was charged down.
The young Egremont side came back and led by a powerful back row and some lively backs caused the Greens to defend several phases.
Following a couple of rucks close to the line an Egremont forwards crashed over for a try.
From the kick-off Wigton won a turn-over and drove close to the line. Although Okesene was stopped five metres out Joe Marrs was able to step his way through two tacklers to score Wigton’s last try.
With the last play of the game Egremont were awarded a penalty try from a deliberate knock on.
It was a good performance from Wigton in an entertaining game where both sides tried to move the ball around.
Next for the Greens is the toughest test of the season so far, unbeaten Penrith 2s away on January 4.
