A bid to build a 29-home estate on a former garden centre site in Walney has been recommended for approval.
Members of Barrow in Furness local area planning committee are recommended to give the go-ahead to plans from Leck Construction Ltd to build the estate on the former Avon Garden Centre on Mill Lane in Walney.
The disused garden centre is opposite the fire station and next to Vickerstown Primary School.
The estate would consist of three affordable two-bedroom properties, 22 three-bedroom properties and four four-bedroom houses.
Each property on the site will have two car parking spaces and there will be additional space for visitor parking.
The application said: “The proposed scheme has been designed to assimilate the site with its surroundings to create a high quality sustainable residential development.
“The proposed site layout has been developed to respond directly to the character of the landscape and local context, and to the landscape features within the site.”.
A previous planning application for outline permission for the construction of three homes on the site was refused in 2011 as the site was not allocated for housing at the time. However it has now been designated for homes in the local plan.
Council planning officers said: “Overall the proposal offers a compatible and sensitive housing development that makes good use of this premium allocated housing site in a sustainable location that would benefit from and support local services.”
Members of Barrow in Furness local area planning committee will discuss the proposals on January 7 at Barrow Town Hall.
